A high-performance tyre can only fulfill its role if it is properly inflated and regularly inspected. A few simple checks can detect a problem before it affects safety, comfort, or fuel consumption.
Use the pressure recommended by the vehicle
The correct tyre pressure isn't the one printed on the sidewall. The correct pressure is usually found on the door jamb, fuel filler flap, or in the vehicle's owner's manual. Several values may be indicated depending on the load, number of passengers, speed, or tyre size.
Measure preferably when cold
Tyre pressure increases when the tyre heats up while driving. To obtain a reading comparable to the manufacturer's recommendations, check your tyres before a long trip or after a period of inactivity. Do not deflate a hot tyre simply because the reading is higher.
Why underinflation is a problem
Insufficient tyre pressure increases tyre deformation and heat buildup. This can lead to shoulder wear, reduced handling precision, and increased rolling resistance. The risk is even greater with heavy loads, hot weather, or long highway journeys.
Why overinflation is not a solution
Excessive pressure can reduce comfort, alter the contact surface, and promote central wear. Pressure must be adjusted to the load according to the manufacturer's specifications, and an arbitrary margin should not be added.
The TPMS indicator does not replace the pressure gauge
The pressure monitoring system alerts you to any variation or abnormal value depending on its operation. It does not replace manual checking and does not detect all defects: cuts, bulges, uneven wear, embedded objects, or sidewall aging.
The control routine
- Check the pressure of all four tyres regularly and before a long journey.
- Also check the spare wheel if there is one.
- Inspect the flanks, shoulders and grooves.
- Remove only small surface stones; do not remove an embedded object until the tyre is still inflated.
- Check that the valve caps are present and that the valves are not cracked.
- Observe any difference in wear between the left and right sides.
After a shock or vibration
An impact can damage the rim, sidewall, or internal structure without causing an immediate puncture. Any new vibration, vehicle pulling, or pressure loss warrants a wheel, balancing, and alignment check.
Preserving tyres during immobilization
For prolonged periods of inactivity, avoid excessive loads and adverse exposure if possible. Before resuming driving, a tyre pressure check and a complete inspection should be performed.
These actions do not replace a professional diagnosis, but they allow for a quick response to the first signs of abnormality.
