The European tyre label makes it easier to compare tyres of the same size and category. It provides information on three criteria measured using standardized methods, as well as on certain winter performance characteristics. It is a selection tool, not an absolute ranking.
Rolling resistance and energy efficiency
The first scale, classified as A to E, represents rolling resistance. A more favorable class can help reduce the energy needed to move the vehicle and therefore fuel or electricity consumption.
The actual effect also depends on the vehicle, pressure, driving style, load, traffic and route.
Adhesion on wet surfaces
The second scale, also of A to EThis compares longitudinal braking performance on wet surfaces under test conditions. A good rating is an important criterion for everyday safety.
It does not by itself describe resistance to aquaplaning, cornering grip, dry road performance or low temperature behavior.
External rolling noise
The label displays a decibel rating and a noise class. This refers to the noise measured outside the vehicle as it passes, not directly to the perceived noise level inside the cabin. The vehicle's insulation, upholstery, and wear and tear significantly influence perceived comfort.
Snow and ice pictograms
The pictogram 3PMSFThe three-peaked mountain with a snowflake symbol appears on tyres that have passed a standardized snow performance test. An ice pictogram may appear on some tyres designed for particularly severe icy conditions; these products are not necessarily suitable for everyday use in France.
What is the purpose of the QR code?
The QR code links to the product's information sheet in the European EPREL database. This sheet allows verification of the declared information: dimensions, indices, classes, noise levels, and other labeling characteristics.
The official framework is set by the European regulation 2020/740The records can be consulted in the EPREL base of tyres.
What the label doesn't measure
- mileage;
- road holding on dry ground;
- directional accuracy;
- comfort over irregularities;
- shock resistance;
- behavior in all forms of aquaplaning;
- performance after several years of wear.
How to use it to choose?
Start by filtering tyres compatible with your vehicle, then compare the classes according to your priorities. For a driver who does a lot of highway driving, performance, noise, and rain resistance will be important. For winter driving, snow certification and the season are paramount. A good choice is a balance between homologation, intended use, safety, comfort, and budget.
