How manufacturers prepare tyres for electric cars

How manufacturers prepare tyres for electric cars
Weight, instant torque, range and silence: discover why electric cars are imposing new constraints on tyres and how manufacturers are responding.

Electric cars do not simply require replacing a combustion engine with a battery and an electric motor. Their mass, their instantly available torque and their silence profoundly alter the constraints imposed on the tyres.

For car manufacturers and manufacturers, the tyre is therefore becoming a strategic element: it must support more load, efficiently transmit torque, preserve range and remain quiet, without sacrificing safety.

1. Support a greater weight

Batteries represent a significant mass. Therefore, in a comparable category, an electric vehicle can put more stress on its tyres than a combustion engine model.

Manufacturers are working on the frame, sides, belts and materials to obtain a structure capable of supporting this load while maintaining controlled deformation.

The goal isn't simply to make the tyre stiffer. Excessive stiffness could compromise comfort or alter vehicle handling. Therefore, a balance must be found between load capacity, precision, and bump absorption.

2. Managing instant torque

An electric motor can deliver significant torque from the very first rotations. During sustained acceleration, this force is transmitted almost immediately to the wheels.

The tread pattern and rubber compounds must therefore offer sufficient grip while limiting excessive wear. The tread patterns are also designed to distribute stress across the contact patch.

Electronic traction control systems participate in this management, but the tyre remains the only element that actually transmits the force to the road surface.

3. Reduce rolling resistance to preserve range

On an electric vehicle, every energy loss directly impacts the available range. Therefore, tyre rolling resistance becomes particularly important.

Manufacturers are developing compounds capable of limiting energy-consuming deformations when the tyre is in motion. The challenge lies in reducing these losses without decreasing grip, especially on wet roads.

The profile design, internal structure and operating pressure also contribute to this pursuit of efficiency.

4. The silence makes the noise of the tyres much more noticeable

In a combustion engine car, the engine and exhaust mask some of the road noise. When the powertrain becomes almost silent, the noise from the tyres, the wind, and the road surface becomes more prominent.

Engineers are therefore working on the shape of the tread blocks, their distribution, and the acoustic frequencies generated upon contact with the road. Some solutions also use sound-absorbing materials inside the tyre to reduce certain resonances.

Acoustic comfort is thus becoming a real development criterion.

5. Wear and tear that requires particular attention

Greater weight and high torque can increase the mechanical stresses exerted on the tread. However, longevity depends on many factors: driving style, geometry, pressure, vehicle power, type of journey, and tyre compound.

Manufacturers are therefore seeking to develop tyres capable of withstanding these stresses without excessively increasing rolling resistance.

6. Suitable dimensions and load capacities

Electric vehicles may require tyres with specific load capacities. The dimensions chosen by manufacturers result from a compromise between mass, aerodynamics, handling, braking, comfort, and energy efficiency.

It is therefore essential to respect the dimensions, load indices and speed ratings approved for the vehicle when replacing tyres.

7. The tyre also participates in regenerative braking.

Regenerative braking transforms some of the vehicle's kinetic energy into electrical energy to recharge the battery. However, this deceleration still occurs through the wheels.

The tyre must therefore transmit the forces generated by the electric motor during the recovery phase, in addition to the conventional braking system.

On slippery surfaces, the electronic management system must coordinate energy recovery, braking, and available grip.

8. Connected tyres could play an increasing role

Electric vehicles are often highly connected and equipped with numerous sensors. This architecture facilitates the integration of data from the tyres.

Pressure, temperature, load or wear estimation could gradually be used to optimize vehicle behavior and anticipate maintenance operations.

Eventually, the car could adapt certain parameters based on the actual condition of its tyres.

9. Can a conventional tyre be fitted to an electric car?

The answer depends primarily on the homologations and characteristics required by the vehicle. Not all electric vehicles necessarily require a tyre with a specific commercial designation "EV".

However, the chosen tyre must absolutely comply with the appropriate dimensions and ratings, and its characteristics must correspond to the vehicle's requirements.

A tyre optimized for electric vehicles can offer advantages in terms of rolling resistance, noise, load capacity or longevity depending on the use.

10. The electric tyre becomes a concentrated compromise

Developing a tyre for an electric vehicle perfectly illustrates the complexity of modern tyres. Improving range must not compromise braking performance. Strengthening the structure must not make the vehicle uncomfortable. Increasing lifespan must not reduce grip.

Manufacturers therefore use numerical simulations, new materials and intensive testing to balance these parameters.

Optimus Future Lab's vision

At the house of Optimus PneusWe consider electrification to be one of the major drivers of innovation in the tyre industry. The tyre of electric cars is not simply a reinforced conventional tyre: it results from a comprehensive optimization of weight, torque, range, quietness, and safety.

As batteries, motors and software evolve, tyres will also continue to transform.

Optimus Future Lab deciphers the technologies that are transforming the tyre, the automobile and the mobility of tomorrow.
